What is Contemporary Furniture Style

What is Contemporary Furniture Style

Contemporary furniture style is a design aesthetic emphasizing sleek lines, minimalism, and simplicity. This style emerged in the late 20th century and is characterized by its clean, geometric shapes and use of industrial materials. Contemporary furniture style is often associated with modernism, but it has unique features that set it apart from other design movements.

Some of those Unique Design Features include

  1. Use of technology and melding of different types of materials, such as glass, metal, and plastic. These materials help to create a minimalist look that is both modern and elegant. This is different from modernism, which tends to use more traditional materials such as wood for things like table tops and metal for things like unattractive hairpin legs.
  2. Focus on functionality being designed to be practical and comfortable without sacrificing style. This makes it an excellent choice for people on the go who want furniture that looks great and is easy to use.
  3. Emphasis on simplicity with straight and clean lines, and void of ornate details or excessive decoration. This simplicity helps to create a sense of calm and serenity in the space where the furniture is used.
  4. Neutral colors: Contemporary furniture often features neutral colors, such as black, white, and gray, which help to create a minimalist aesthetic.  I often think of Dieter Rams as a good example of contemporary furniture. Modernism, on the other hand, often incorporated bright colors and bold patterns.

One of its defining features is its focus on functionality. Contemporary furniture is designed to be practical and comfortable without sacrificing style. It often incorporates ergonomic design principles, such as adjustable seats or backrests, to ensure that users are comfortable and well-supported.  Many pieces use soft fabrics, such as wool or leather, to create a sense of warmth and comfort.

I’m the owner of Benham Design Concepts, a mixed media art studio where I design and build custom furniture and other works of art using wood, glass, stone, and various metals.
In this blog, I talk about the art I create, my journey, and the things I learn along the way.
