Trestle Dining Table is the most versatile dining table

Why I Love Building Trestle Tables (And Why You’ll Love Owning One)

What I’ve noticed after years of building custom furniture is that the dining room isn’t what it used to be. That formal space where fancy china gathered dust.  That only happens at grandma’s house.  That china hutch is a thing of the past for most families. These days, your dining table needs to work as hard as you do.  It’s where the kids do their homework, where you return emails with your coffee, pay your bills, and where crafts happen.  The dining room has become the place where life unfolds.  This is why I think trestle tables might just be the perfect piece for a modern family’s needs.

Your Knees Will Thank You

Ever sat at a corner seat and had to awkwardly straddle a table leg? Or banged your knee trying to scoot your chair in? Yeah, me too. That’s one of my favorite things about the trestle design.  No legs at the corners means no bruised knees and way more comfort for everyone at the table.

Instead of four corner legs, a trestle table has two or three supports spaced evenly along the center of the base, connected by a horizontal beam that runs underneath the tabletop. This means you can squeeze in more people, everyone gets generous legroom, and you can even slide benches completely under the table when you’re not using them. They even work great as work tables; you can walk around them without your feet kicking a leg.  This equates to more flexibility, more function, more seating, and happier guests.

Built Strong, Built Smart

These tables don’t tip easily and won’t sag in the middle even after years of use. The trestle supports and that horizontal beam add incredible stability to an already robust design.  This also makes it so you can dial in the perfect height for your dining table.

Room for Everyone

A trestle table seats more people comfortably than a traditional four-legged table of the same size. If you love hosting or your house is the gathering spot for family and friends, this design ensures everyone’s comfortable no matter where they sit. With a traditional table, the legs actually eat up usable table space. With a trestle design, you get all that space back as the legs are centered and out of the way.

They’re also surprisingly great for smaller spaces. Sure, the table itself might take up floor space, but you’ll maximize your seating because you’re not working around corner legs. Plus, that generous surface makes them perfect for doubling as a craft table or buffet when you need it.

They Never Go Out of Style

After building furniture for years, I can tell you that trends come and go, but trestle tables are timeless. Whether your home leans Mission and Arts and Crafts, contemporary and minimalist, or anything in between, a trestle table will fit right in. That’s the beauty of a trestle design that’s been around for centuries.

The design of the stretcher and trestle supports is what defines the character of the table. When we’re planning your custom piece, that’s where we’ll focus to make sure it matches your style perfectly. And don’t be afraid to mix things up by combining different chairs, adding cushions here and there, throw in a bench. It all works.

Let’s Build Your Table

When you’re ready to talk about your trestle table, here are the things to think about.

  • What’s your space like? I’ll need to know about height, width, length, and how the room flows.
  • What type of wood speaks to you? Each species has its own character and beauty.
  • Will this table see daily use, or is it more for special occasions?
  • How many people on a typical Tuesday night? How about when everyone comes over for the holidays?
  • What’s your budget?

The beauty of custom work is that we can build exactly what you need. A table that fits your space, your life, and your budget. A table that’ll be around for your grandkids to gather around someday.

Let’s create something beautiful together.  If you are a woodworker and want to build your own, I have Trestle Dining Table Plans available.
